The lightly raced SMOKEY'S JOY lived up to his name by notching up his first win at the juicy odds of $20 at Hawkesbury on Saturday 3rd September 2016 as one of the "smokeys" in the field and bringing lots of joy to his owners.

By Haradasun, the four-year-old gelding was having only his second start in a race, his first start was also on his home track back in May of 2016.

The fourth race of the day was a 1000 metres Maiden Handicap, SMOKEY'S JOY was to jump from barrier six, his allocated weight was brought down to 54.5kgs after the in-form three kilogram claiming apprentice Jean Van Overmeire was booked to ride.

After jumping well Jean let his mount find his feet and was approximately three lengths behind the leaders, The Bull ($1.75 fav), Sophie's Image and Bint Snitzel.

About 500 metres from home SMOKEY'S JOY was striding out nicely, parked in the middle of the second row of horses and preparing for the run to the finish line.

It was just past the 400 metres pole that Jean, after assessing the opportunities that were available to them, made the decision, which could've have been a winning move, to dive back to the inside of another locally-trained runner, Petite Voix.

SMOKEY'S JOY was now full of running and heading for home, a few flourishes of the whip to keep his horse's momentum up and victory was theirs.

It was a neck the margin to Petite Voix who was game in defeat with Sophie's Image coming in third. The race time was 57.87 and the last 600 metres was covered in 34.53.

Scott and Jean are building a nice winning record with Jean riding four of his seven winners so far this season.

Congratulations to all of the owners, including members of the Wheatland family from Western Australia, it's great to be able to have another winner for you after having some success with another of your horses, Brodies.

We truly appreciate you entrusting us with your trusty steed and sincerely look forward to SMOKEY'S JOY's future which we're sure will include more wins.
