In a display that left the other runners wondering where he went, POET’S ADVOCATE led from start to finish yesterday at the Newcastle Racecourse in the last race of the day the Hamilton Hawks Rugby Club 1400m Class 2 Handicap.

POET’S ADVOCATE had to carry second top weight of 57.5kgs and had drawn barrier seven out of a possible ten and the track was rated a Good 4. His jockey, Kiwi now Sydney-based Rory Hutchings, was successful riding the winner in the first of the day for Randwick-based trainer, Les Bridge.

Poet’s Voice (GB) the sire of POET’S ADVOCATE, is getting his fair share of winners lately including the exciting colt from the Godolphin stable named Virdine who won the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes earlier in the day at Royal Randwick. The colt’s record is now four wins from four starts with his two wins this preparation being in black-type races.

From barrier “rise” Rory was positive, “Plan A” was to try and lead without overtaxing his horse. From their wide barrier the pair were in front after going one hundred metres and by the 1200 metres mark settled two lengths clear of the rest of the field.

POET’S ADVOCATE was keen to get on with the job, it took a while, but the jockey managed to get his mount to come back under him slightly and led by just over a length with approximately 850 metres to go.

With 600 metres left to run, Rory loosened his hold a little and POET’S ADVOCATE responded, putting 4 lengths on the second horse rounding the home turn and the duo were really travelling.

Nearing the 200 metres the lead was still 4 lengths, Rory kept his horse’s mind on the job giving him full rein and sooling him along with an occasional wave of the whip.

The locally-trained Clevanicc was coming home strongly from back in the field with Nikkas ’N’ A Twist holding third, but the finish line was looming fast. With 50 metres to go it was all over, Rory sat up and POET’S ADVOCATE coasted to the post.

The official winning margin was 1 1/2 lengths, 1:23.88 was the time for the race and the 600 metres sectional took 35.66, at the very nice odds of $16.

Congratulations to the owners, many of them are long-time clients also to Scott for purchasing the horse and his team for getting POET’S ADVOCATE to the winners stall again. Rory Hutchings also deserves a mention for his daring front-running ride.

Here’s hoping there’s more wins to come in the not-too-distant future … Good Luck !
