Maximum effort was required by JAXIM, a four-year-old son of Ready’s Image (USA) to get him first across the line in the sixth race on the card, the Rygate Racecourse Design Maiden Handicap (1300m) at the Hawkesbury Race Club’s Saturday meeting held on 10th March 2018.
JAXIM’s was to carry 54kgs, with Bobby El-Issa, who had ridden the horse at his previous start, the declared rider and the gelding would jump one from the outside in barrier nine. The track, rated a Good 3, had firmed up slightly during the days previous, the moveable rail was set in the true position.
When they jumped JAXIM was a bit tardy out of the gates, missing the kick by a couple of lengths. Bobby let his horse get into his stride and eventually tagged onto the back end of the field after they’d gone about 300 metres.
On towards the 800 metres marker and the pair were steadily making ground along the rail, JAXIM was now positioned approximately five lengths off the leader, the locally - trained Bel Serenade.
Around 500 metres from home the speed quickened and when it did, caught a few horses off guard, giving the quick-thinking “Bobby The Jockey” the opportunity to extricate JAXIM off of the fence and into some galloping room, clearly a critical, winning move.
Rounding the home turn and the 400 metres pole behind them, the jockey had JAXIM four horses off the fence with a clear run to the finish. Out in front, Bel Serenade had kicked strongly 300 metres out and was going to be hard to catch.
JAXIM was closing on the leader with every stride, 200 metres to go now and the duo had moved into second position. Bobby keeping his mount’s mind on the job, gave a few flourishes of “the persuader”, his actions produced the desired effect drawing alongside Bel Serenade, who just wouldn’t lie down.
Within the shadows of the post, JAXIM, still getting to the line strongly, took the upper hand and victory was theirs. Going on to win by a neck, the time for the race was 1:17.86 the 600 metres sectional was timed at 34.42.
Well done to Scott and his team and to Bobby El-Issa for a heady, timely ride. It was great to see the yellow and aqua colours of your owners salute the judge again.
Congratulations to owners / breeders Dr. Max Kowalczuk and his wife Sally, on another nice win. Here’s hoping JAXIM can emulate another member of the family, Hawkesbury Guineas winner SHAZEE LEE, who is the daughter of his grand-dam SHAZEE and go on to bigger and better things.
