Honours Essential demonstrated his staying capabilities on the weekend by taking out the AB Scrap Metal Maiden Plate at Newcastle over 2300m.
The 4yo gelding by Honours List carried 59kg and was good value for punters at $7.50.
After settling last in a field of 7 and with a patient ride from jockey, Luke Cumberland, the big gelding railed along the inside at the top of the straight and proved too strong for his rivals.
Owner Wol Lanham was ecstatic that the horse, he bred and raised himself, broke through on only his 4th start to win at Newcastle on a Saturday race meeting.
Trainer Scott Singleton said "I couldnt believe he wasn't shorter on the tote, the horse had every right to be favourite after his last start at Gosford, finishing 2nd and only being beaten by 0.3 lengths after having circled the field".
