That was the factor used when SMOOTH ELEMENT, a three-year-old daughter of the Queensland based stallion Red Element, went through her gears to trounce her opposition on the Archer Racecourse at Nowra in the fourth race of the day, the 1200 metre Kinghorn Ford Focus Maiden Handicap for Fillies and Mares.

After a fine performance in race two by the other representative of the stable for the meeting, Humanise, finished second after leading and being caught close to the post, SMOOTH ELEMENT posted a stable victory and in doing so, broke her maiden status.

Her first two runs this preparation at provincial meetings were good efforts after which our astute trainer Scott selected this race for the filly with a view to winning it, once again he was spot on in his judgement.

The betting market reflecting the confidence of her trainer starting a $2.50 favourite.

The filly began nicely from barrier six and was ridden along to be in a handy position and after passing the 1000 metres had taken up the role of pacemaker.

Jockey Nick Heywood then settled the pace and was travelling along comfortably in the lead, with locally trained Dashie De Luxe keeping SMOOTH ELEMENT honest racing on her outside.

It was status quo passing the 600 metres mark and rounding the home turn. Once balanced in the straight it looked like the winner would come from the leading pair, although Dashie De Luxe was under more vigourous riding.

It was 250 metres from home that Nick decided to go up a gear and it was so smooth with his mount increasing the margin to the second horse with every gear change eventually going on to win with her ears pricked by three and a half lengths, Danish De Luxe stuck on to take second place with Kiss In The Dark a further four lengths away in third.

The time for the 1200 metre event, was 1:12.71 which considering the heavy 9 track rating, was reasonable.

Congratulations go to owners, A J Gafa, A G Smith, J Fullerton, C Cook, C Niezabitowski, C J McCrudden, T R Campbell, D Martignago as well as Scott who is also in the ownership.

Based on the ease of her victory there's no doubt SMOOTH ELEMENT will be visiting the winners' stall again.
