ABBALAC, the ex Queensland, six-year-old mare owned and trained by Scott, showed her liking for the Bathurst track yesterday, 10th August, when she made it successive wins at the Central District's racecourse.

It was also a successful day for her jockey, with the 4kg claiming apprentice rider Crystal Conning notching up her first ever win on the mare at only her seventh race ride.

After scratchings, which included ABBALAC's stable mate Qamar, the daughter of Immovable Option (IRE) was to face a field of eleven runners. She would jump from barrier seven and with Crystal's claim her weight would come down to 55kgs.

As far as the betting was concerned there were really only two chances - the favourite John D'Non ($3.40) and ABBALAC ($4.60) with the third pick a $7 chance.

Shortly after they jumped Crystal let her mount get into a steady rhythm and was travelling nicely in the run, settling in the back half of the field and five lengths off the pace by the time they'd reached the 1200 metres mark.

The mare was still a similar margin from the leaders passing the 800 metres continuing to race well within herself.

It was at this point that the rider decided to increase the tempo a little and began to make ground on the leaders.

The duo eased out to be facing the breeze four or five horses off the fence going forward.

With the 600 metres mark behind them, although the widest runner, Crystal didn't panic and kept her horse well balanced still maintaining a good pace.

The home bend at Bathurst is pretty tight, this may have caught the young apprentice by surprise as on rounding the turn ABBALAC was even wider, approximately eight horses off the fence and losing some ground.

Once into the straight, and balanced up the pair were able to regain their momentum and 200 metres from home, out in the middle of the track, they were gaining on the leaders.

Under the urgings of young Miss Conning and the winning post in their sights, ABBALAC was full of running, she hit the lead 100 metres out and went on to win by two lengths, in comfortable fashion, in the time of 1:17.92.

Well done Scott that was ABBALAC's seventh victory, five of them have been since joining your stable.

Congratulations to Crystal on your first win, you rode very well and kept your horse well balanced and always comfortable - it will be the first of many.
