That was the case with GUIDE ME, a daughter of the NJC's Cameron Handicap winner Raheeb, when she chalked up win number two from her eleven starts at Queanbeyan yesterday 28th September 2015.
The benefit of an eighteen day break and the step up to the mile saw GUIDE ME start favourite in the betting ($2.25) and she didn't disappoint with her jockey Brendan Ward giving her a charmed run by using the inside rail as a guide for the entire race.
The mare jumped nicely with Brendan easing her to settle midfield and getting along at an nice clip. At the 1200 metres the pair were just rearward of midfield with clear running in front of them, taking advantage of that and without much effort, GUIDE ME made some easy ground and by the 1000 metres mark was travelling fourth on the fence, three and a half lengths off the leader, Pradier.
It was there the pair stayed until just before the home turn. With the tempo quickening due to the front runners being pushed along, GUIDE ME stuck to the inside rail taking the increase in speed in her stride.
Brendan clicked his mount up and within fifty metres had speared through to be threatening for the lead. After giving the mare full rein once balanced in the straight, the rider continued to ride GUIDE ME along keeping her mind on the task at hand.
Full of running now, horse and rider took the lead about 200 metres from the winning post and were headed for victory. The mare was tiring late and despite a strong finishing effort by Magic Season, the post came too soon, the margin to the winner, GUIDE ME, a long neck.
Again our thanks and congratulations go to owner Mrs Godfrey for entrusting her mare with us, to Brendan Ward for a good ride and our astute trainer for his expertise in selecting the right race and in preparing GUIDE ME to the minute, enabling her to produce another victory.
